The Cahors AOC is located in the Lot department and covers 4000 hectares of vineyard between Cahors and Soturac. Called the “Black Wine”, Cahors is a red wine with a worldwide reputation, its colour so dark it can appear black. The vines are mostly planted on the flat surfaces at the top of the limestone plateaux that border the meandering Lot valley (on both banks). The vineyards also flow over the steep and better-exposed flanks of the valley formed by the ancient alluvial terraces of the river, composed variously of pebbles, quartz, gravel and sand. The Cahors climate is a mixture of maritime and Mediterranean. Rainfall is well spaced out throughout the year and the temperatures are mild. But the terroir benefits from regular and remarkable sunshine during the hot summers, very favourable to ripening the grapes and the power developed by the wines of Cahors.
